It's pretty much been known for decades that Stalin was about to attack Germany in September of 1941. The Documents have even been released with detailed plans. Hitler found out about it during Winter War when the Soviet Diplomat Plane was forced down when it was returning from London back to Moscow...Which is the REAL reason for Operation Barbarossa. Before that he had no plans to take out Stalin. So either Germany attacks first, or build a defensive lines strong enough to withstand Soviets attack on Germany. One way they could have won it, is if they had Army group North capture Murmansk all the way down to Leningrad and over to Arkhangelsk. Army group Center capture the Baltics and Army group south capture Ukraine. Once army group north has captured those areas, Finnish forces could hold on to them and help supply them and they could send forces from the North down towards Estonia to help out Army group center. That would have stopped all aid from USA and UK from reaching USSR. Without that aid, USSR wouldn't even survive 1 winter, Stalin even said after the war, the war was won with US steel and Russian blood. They wouldn't have made it on their own.

Logistics bullshit (having the explosives experts land at the same time or after the first wave, overloading the troops, and more), no plan to evacuate badly injured soldiers, bringing in armor which made things worst in the first several hours. Hitler's original plan was to capture Murmansk and the oil fields before going to Moscow. But the Generals convinced him to go for Moscow first. Had they followed the original Barbarossa plans, aid from USA and Britain would have been stopped. Might not have captured the oil fields, but Russia wouldn't have anything to use the oil with as the aid from the states wouldn't reach them. Would actually been an easy win for Germany, taken maybe 2 years at the most before Soviet would be defeated. All you need to do is to look up how much aid they got from USA and Britain from the very first week of the war. Like they knew it was coming, ships were already loaded when the war started. INSANE amounts of military hardware, like tanks, trucks, planes, ammunition, Food, trains, etc etc etc. All that would never reach USSR and without it, Germany would have just destroyed what Soviet had at the start of the war and then just taken the rest without an fight. Just to give an idea, when German forces moved into Crimea, they ran into Brand new Ford 3 axle Trucks, brand new cannons from USA and UK, guns from USA and UK, and food from USA and T-34 TANKS made in USA. None of that would have been there had they captured Murmansk like was the original plan. Really good books written about WW2 based on Declassified documents, not what the winners made up, but What actually happened. Letters between world leaders, letters from secret agents, when you read these books, you will find out why and who started the war and when that decision was made. Here is a hint, the main culprit behind WW2 said in the early 30's after German GDP surpassed the British GDP. "Germany must be DESTROYED ONCE AND FOR ALL". After the war he wrote in his book. "the war was never about defeating Nazism, it was about Destroying Germany and Killing as many Germans as possible". This person is one of the biggest War criminals in the last 200 years. He ordered the air force to bomb all German cities that had not been bombed at the very end of the war. Where Millions of innocent civilians died.

The German general Kesselring should be considered here. Not only did Kesselring deal sternly with the pompous Desert Fox (who was N0T winning in North Africa), but he had to coordinate the entire Mediterranean Theater for Germany, despite not getting the men or equipment he desired. Kesselring was a helluva general. Read about him.

Unfortunately most of the Soviet casualities (both civilian and military) were Ukrainians, Belarusians, and other non-Russian eastern european states. Russia occupied and force conscripted millions of non-Russians in the occupied countries then sent them to die. A good portion of the "Soviet casualties" came down to Russia committing a form of genocide against the countries it would later dominate in the Warsaw Pact.
